On November 5 I went and participated in the Open Mic Night, where I got to listen to a variety of other very talented singers as well as a comedy routine, along with singing “Mac the Knife” myself. A very fun night all around!

This semester I have been a member of the UNE newspaper, the Bolt, as we have covered various stories ranging from sporting events, to film reviews, even to dogs coming to the campus!
During the fall semester I was a member of the UNE Players as we worked to put together our production of the play Humbletown. During this experience I learned to grow and become more skilled as an actor, and just how to put on a show at the university, even if we don’t have a stage to work with yet!
During the first week of the term, my roommate, who is a Marine Biology major himself, and I went on a full tour of the Marine Science Center where I got to see and learn about the various projects and equipment used in the center, such as the crab treadmill used to measure oxygen used in their movement.
I am a member of the UNE Tennis team, which has been a very fun and rewarding experience this first semester of college. Although I was unfortunately unable to participate in any competitive games between other colleges, hopefully I should be able to play during the spring semester as there will be more games then.
On November 19, I went to a Women’s Basketball game between UNE and Regis College, where UNE won 64 to 44. It was quite an enjoyable experience as I got a great, if not all that close, of a game between the two teams, and got to see UNE get a very nice and solid victory in four quarters.
What I learned from this assignment is that recording audio isn’t as intimidating as I had thought it would be. As far as the sound mixing went, it was very simple and I was able to create something I was somewhat even proud of. I very much enjoyed this venture into the world of podcasts.
When one thinks of a major at a college or university, one thinks of a one-track rail that is meant to shape your learning down the path you’ve chosen, at the expense of all other majors and paths. But that is a very narrow-minded approach, and does not lead to a deeper understanding of the world, which is where the idea of the enriched major comes in. The enriched major is meant to shape one’s learning into a greater, more encompassing vision that allows for greater understanding of the world, as the world is more than just what you choose to study or focus on. Instead, as exemplified by the idea that the “liberal arts and the useful arts can be brought together in the curriculum just as they inevitably must be brought together during life.” The concept of a enriched major is very much illustrated for the english major as represented at UNE, as the statement says that the major focuses on the “highly transferable skills acquired as a student of literature”, focusing on the adaptability of the major as opposed to a one track mentality of a major.
- Yes, there is a certain music box that my family has that evokes a memory of feeling small and young in a way that is just not recorded in writing, as it captures such a woven memory.
- By taking “ghosts” and thoroughly analyzing them, we can access things and aspects of things that have shoved away as to forget them and try and requalify them. Thus, we can find out information that can bring real people, places, and ideas back from the brink of being completely forgotten. In that way, we can reconcile with challenging and distressing things that remain unhealed and unsolved by simply being forgotten.
- The impact of being haunted by white supremacy is the reality that all of our society is constantly shaped by a past that is preferred forgotten. It means a world where everything is in one way or another affected by a history that is poorly documented and eradicated to keep a perpetuated system. A world haunted by white supremacy is one that can never fully heal, until each and every one of those “ghosts” of the past are fully investigated and brought to light.
For Academic goals, first off the bat is keeping up with work. As a chronic procrastinator, I have to get used to creating a proper schedule or outline of when I need to do work, and sticking to it. Beyond that, another near term goal I marked down is to stay engaged in classes, since I have to get used to classes that have the potential to be almost three hours long, and a factor of that is to always make sure to get plenty of rest and just keep myself participating in classes. Longer term, I marked down the goal of actively looking for classes that aren’t just requirements or help me get some other end-term goal, but truly fascinate me and may be a bit out of my areas of expertise. Another goal I set was to always keep curious and keep thinking outside of the box, not to get hemmed in as I go further down my major’s path.
For personal goals, I thought about rudimentary current goals, to get my groundwork under me. So I thought about how I do want to be more social, and get used to and involved in the campus that I’m now residing at. Beyond that, I also further wanted to figure out which times do work best for me to to do what, and when I can have some time to myself. For longer term goals, I furthered my social emphasis as to be more outgoing and be willing to communicate in more situations, even ones I’m more unfamiliar with. Beyond that, just trying to figure out where I do indeed want to shape my academic path and what to do with the information that I’ll have learned in my time here. To really learn what I can do with the person I will have become.
